Many competitors, be it musicians, web designers, developers, or marketing experts have a hard-time sharing information. Why? Be it selfishness or just guarding "trade secrets", there are ways to communicate with others in a manner that not only gives information and guidance, but also protects what is yours.
When a person or group trys to create a monopoly, it is only a manner of time before their efforts are useless.
Most recently the efforts of the group of anonymous software developers in Los Angeles
(see http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TECH/09/01/apple.iphone/)
who presented an interface that allows iPhone owners to use their device with other phone systems and not just AT&T, showed how useless and counter productive fear of the competition can be.
